"You need to tell your parents that their words are having a very negative effect on you." Image: Getty Question: I’m in my late 30s and a single mum of an 18-year-old. We both live at my parents’ house.

I pay electricity, heat and the main food bill. My issue isn’t about living at home or with my child and parents. They’re great with him and they treat him so much more like an adult than they do me.

I never had a close relationship with my family, not as much as my brother. I’ve always been told how, what and when to do things. It’s very frustrating to be almost 40 and to be paying so much for four people in a home.

I still get treated as if I’m a kid. When my brother comes home for the weekend my mum and I go shopping and she gets whatever she wants and I pay the bill. She buys a pile of things that we never usually get just because they are my brother’s favourite things that he’s asked for.
