Alien: Romulus has knocked Deadpool and Wolverine off from the top spot at the US box office after the Marvel film enjoyed three successful weeks at the top. The latest instalment in the Alien franchise earnt $41.5 million at the US box office during it's opening weekend, as well as a huge $108.
2 million globally, according to Variety . Movie-goers have clearly been anticipating the newest film in the franchise as they've flocked in large numbers to the cinemas since it's global release on Friday. It is the seventh film in the sci-fi series and is set between the events of Alien, which released in 1979 and Aliens, which came out in 1986.
The film follows a group of young space colonists who are in search of better life conditions and end up coming face to face with hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station. The movie was reportedly made on a production budget of $80 million and so it's already become a profitable pay-off for makers as it's now surpassed that number by over $20 million. It stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu in lead roles.
The sci-fi horror film is yet to surpass the last movie in the franchise, as Alien: Covenant (2017) garnered $240.9 million at the box office. Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine released in theatres on July 26 and collected a whopping $211 million in it's debut to rank it as the sixth-biggest opening weekend of all time.
It also overtook Joker, which released in 2019, as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige took to social media to share a personal note of thanks last week to the audiences for accepting his film. He penned: "Thanks for making Marvel Studios' first R-rated movie the biggest of all time.
It's fantastic to see that audiences are loving this movie as we all loved making it. "All those conversations were worth it," as he signed off with his name on a personalised Marvel Studios note. The Marvel Cinematic Universe added a solid $29 million to it's huge total in it's third weekend since being released, being pushed to second spot.
Meanwhile, Blake Lively's It Ends With Us found itself in the third spot, after earning $180 million globally. Alien: Romulus is in cinemas now..
