The R-rated adventure - which re-teams Ryan Reynolds ' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman 's Wolverine - has already earned massive praise from fans through early screenings. But when it comes to the critics, opinions have been sharply split, with some praising the chemistry of the two leads and humour, while others have branded it 'just awful'.

The film follows loudmouth Deadpool recruiting a Wolverine from a different timeline to form an unlikely team, in order to defeat a common enemy. Early reviews have teased that viewers can expect plenty more outrageous jokes and meta commentary, with A-list cameos and bloody action in store. ' He wrote: 'From cameos to background Easter eggs to long-fan-ficked meet-ups, it’s a relentless onslaught of surprises designed to get audiences screaming and throwing popcorn in the air.' While in another four star review from Vicky Jessop in The Standard, she wrote: 'For nerds Deadpool & Wolverine feels like the comic book equivalent of the Superbowl: massive, glitzy, crammed to bursting with stars, blood-pumping action and featuring an excellent soundtrack.' Ian Sandwell gave the movie four stars too in his review for Digital Spy, saying it was 'terrific entertainment, two hours of fan service wrapped up as a summer blockbuster.

' He said the leads had 'strong chemistry', and while admitting the movie may not hold up years to come, as it has 'not much going on under the surface', he went ont to say: 'It's pure fan service, so knock off a star if you were after more, but Deadpool & Wolverine knows it's fan service – and it doesn't f**king care.' IGN's Tom Jorgensen also admitted the film is not without its flaws, but called it 'an outrageous, consistently funny superhero comedy that succeeds largely thanks to the contagious enthusiasm of leads Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and a surprisingly classy perspective on superhero movie history.' Richard Lawson also praised Ryan and Hugh in Vanity Fair , saying they 'are a dream together, both immensely comfortable in their respective characters and apparently willing to do just about anything to give the audience a laugh.

' But he added that their action sequences leave a lot to be desired, despite being both 'bloody and profane' writing: 'The sparring between the silly goose and the tough grump that has been a centerpiece of the film’s marketing never quite sparks; their fight scenes are equally underwhelming, repetitive and terribly hampered by both characters’ invincibility.' She added: 'Despite a stellar media campaign, the odd-couple buddy team of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is occasionally wry and entertaining, but the action is "a slog".

' The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw also only gave the film three stars, saying 'there are a lot of laughs here as this film crashes along with plenty of juke-box slams to keep blood-sugar content high'. But he added that the constant meta gags at the expense of Marvel and Disney's decision to purchase Fox and the X-Men with it, could be both 'amusing and exhausting.' Bilge Ebiri had the same opinion, writing in Vulture: 'At times, it feels like Deadpool has only two flavors of humor: knowing digs at the industry that spawned him and sex jokes.

'These are funny the first few times, but after a while you wonder if maybe he should attempt some new material.' The Independent's Clarisse Loughrey was even more brutal in her assessment, writing: 'Deadpool & Wolverine is as much fun as you can conceivably have at a corporate merger meeting. 'It’s tedious, yet, occasionally, Ryan Reynolds’s fourth wall-allergic “Merc with a Mouth” will pass a note around the table with a penis drawn on it, and everyone can have a quiet, little chuckle to themselves.

But Robbie Collin savaged the flick in his review in The Telegraph, giving it one star and calling it 'a protracted trudge through the cultural wreckage left behind by 20 years of superhero movies, in which nothing of meaning or value can be found' (Emma Corrin pictured in film) Donald Clarke also did not pull any punches in The Irish Times, criticising Deadpool's constant jokes mocking the Marvel Cinematic Universe's recent downfall after a spate of poorly received projects (Ryan and Rob Delaney pictured in film) She gave the film just two stars, admitting that 'Reynolds and Jackman, undoubtedly, have extremely likeable odd-couple chemistry' and singling out Hugh, 'who attacks his role again with palpable intensity, all bleeding emotional wounds and dogged self-hatred.' He fumed: 'Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are dumped into a simpering, smirking movie that feels like a spiritual dead end for the franchise'.

Donald Clarke also did not pull any punches in The Irish Times, criticising Deadpool's constant jokes mocking the Marvel Cinematic Universe's recent downfall after a spate of poorly received projects. He wrote: 'It’s as if the studio is enduring one of those awful comedy roasts, once unavoidable on American cable TV, that allowed celebrities the opportunity to prove they were “good sports”.' He also took umbrage with the 'juvenile' humour itself and giving the film one star, he concluded: 'The creators of Deadpool will argue, lamely in my view, that by admitting the puerile nature of the humour they inure themselves to criticism in that area, but no such excuses are offered for the onanistic self-regard.

'After two hours of this infantile mugging, one is left longing for the genuinely upending humour of the Batman TV series from 60 years ago. Awful. Just awful.
