BRATTLEBORO — Vermont Theatre Company will present "Cyrano" at the Retreat Farm in Brattleboro on Sept. 3 and 4 as part of its Classics at the Farm series. Additional performances will be held at the Dummerston Grange in Dummerston on Sept.
6 and 7. This is a reschedule from the original performance dates at the Retreat Farm that were scheduled for Aug. 9, 10 and 11.
"Cyrano" tells the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, France’s greatest poet and swordsman. Cyrano desires nothing more than to tell the beautiful Roxane how much he loves her but is convinced she will reject him due to his abnormally long nose. When Roxane becomes intrigued by Christian, a handsome but slow-witted cadet under Cyrano’s command, the two men join forces to become her perfect suitor.
Christian provides the handsome facade and Cyrano the poetry. But how long can the ruse last, especially with the threat of an impending war looming over them all? Based on the original play by Edmond Rostand and adapted by Jo Roets with translation by Audrey Van Tuyckom, this version of "Cyrano" is designed with family audiences in mind. Running a little more than an hour, it is a perfect show for children to learn this classic French story.
All 11 roles will be played by only three actors, Emmadora Boutcher, Anders Burrows and James Gelter in a tour-de-force performance that will delight and touch audiences of all ages. Performances will be at 6 p.m.
on Sept. 3, 4, 5 and 6, All performances at the Retreat Farm will be outdoors, and audiences are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs. In case of rain, performances will move indoors to the Retreat’s newly restored North Barn.
