It’s been 15 years since the events of (1991), in which Mitch McDeere and his wife, Abby, risked their lives to take down a crooked law firm in Tennessee. Now they’re living in Manhattan, where Mitch is a partner at a law firm. But an old friend is about to plunge Mitch right back into the seedy, dangerous world he hoped he’d left behind.
is a curious sequel. It’s nice to see Mitch and Abby again, and the story is exactly the kind of thing at which Grisham excels, but the events of are almost entirely irrelevant, and the story would work just as well if it starred two new characters. There was no pressing need for a sequel to , and doesn’t really explain why it is one.
Devoted fans will want to read this, but if you’re looking for just the right book with which to introduce yourself to Grisham’s writing, this isn’t the one. (Ir.
