Lincoln Christian runs an old-fashioned offense. But it works just fine against modern, pass-oriented opponents. That was the case Friday when Lincoln Christian cranked up its flex-bone ground attack and ran to a 30-14 win against Adams Central.
The Crusaders’ offense is similar to the military academies’ triple-option schemes — LC throws sparingly. Coming into Friday’s game, Lincoln Christian averaged just five passes per outing. LC threw only twice Friday (both incomplete).
But the Crusaders didn’t even need to throw. “We are old school triple option. We joke about we’re more Army than Army,” said Lincoln Christian coach Kurt Earl.
“0-for-2, that’s not that odd for us. We are like the service academies. That’s the best chance to move the ball and control games.
” The Crusaders averaged 328 rushing yards per game when they entered Friday’s matchup. “Their flex-bone offense is really good. Their quarterback has been running it since seventh grade, so he knows what he’s looking for,” AC coach Josh Lewis said.
“What they do is unique. They are the type of team that can wear on you. Their motor is always running and that’s tough to deal with.
” By contrast, Adams Central hangs its hat on a strong passing attack, averaging 187 yards per game going into Friday’s final home game. The Patriots’ first touchdown came through the air. Sophomore Kraeson Houghtelling grabbed an eight-yard touchdown pass from AC quarterback Jackson Sughroue.
