A seasoned cruise worker with a rich family history in the industry has divulged his insider advice for those embarking on a sea voyage. Isak Hals, an 'Able Seaman' aboard MS Nordkapp since 2017 for Hurtigruten, hails from a long tradition of seafarers connected to the Norwegian company. Some cruises can provide lackluster experiences, like those that receive one-star reviews, leading to unwanted surprises.

His lineage includes his father, Eivind Eliassen, who served on MS Lofoten in the 1970s, and his grandfather, Fredrik Sandborg Hals, who dedicated 40 years to maritime life, 34 of which were with Hurtigruten, beginning on MS Vesteralen in the 1960s and concluding his career on MS Richard With. The nautical roots run deeper as Isak's great-great-grandfather Fredrik held the position of ship clerk, and his great-uncle Paul Emil Hals was part of the inaugural journey of DS Vesteraalen in 1893, the vessel that would evolve into the renowned Norwegian cruise line Hurtigruten. With his rich maritime service heritage, Isak is an authority on cruising essentials.



He emphasized the importance of dressing appropriately for the Nordic climates Hurtigruten sails through. "(Definitely pack) layers of clothing! It gets cold even in northern Norway during the winter season, and most guests assume a thick warm coat will do the trick. With layers, at least if you get hot you can just take them off," Isak advised.
