Pune: Days after a 21-year-old event management student was gang-raped by three men at Bopdev Ghat , the Pune police have planned a security audit of 18 hills across the city to implement steps that will curb crimes at these spots. The move also follows the two recent robberies on Baner Hill and Hanuman Tekdi within a week of one another. Additional commissioner of police (crime) Shailesh Balkawade on Wednesday told TOI, "Six crime branch units will focus on identifying criminal hotspots, multiple entry-exit points, and access to criminal threat elements, among other issues, at places like Bopdev and Dive ghats, Katraj, Ambegaon, Jambhulwadi, Vetal, Taljai, and Baner hills, besides other hillocks.
" He added that as of now, local police stations and the crime branch have intensified morning and evening patrolling on hills to prevent crimes against women, theft, robberies and dacoities. The teams are equipped with searchlights, weapons, sticks, and walkie-talkies. In addition, patrolling on roads around hills has also been increased.
The security audit report is expected in a week's time. Balkawade also said plans are on the cards to install CCTV cameras, streetlights and signboards cautioning visitors not to visit hills late in the evening as preventive measures. In the course of the investigation into the gang rape, the police have contacted people in 40 villages for leads and checked 450 criminals on record, but there is no breakthrough yet, said the officer.
