Pune: A constable (20) with the rural police was feared drowned in the Indrayani river in Alandi on Sunday. A search operation was underway on Monday to trace her. Pimpri Chinchwad police cited the initial investigation and said the constable is suspected to have jumped into the river from the Alandi bridge due to some personal issue.

“She called her friend before taking the plunge and told him she was ending her life,” senior inspector Bhima Narke of Alandi police told TOI. “We questioned her friend who said the cop did not tell her why she was ending her life,” Narke said. “She only told her friend that no one should be held responsible for her decision.

” Narke said a passerby on the bridge spotted the woman jumping into the river. He tried to save her but the strong water current swept her away, police said. On Monday, teams of the NDRF, Pimpri Chinchwad and Alandi fire brigades, and Wanyajeev Rakshak, Maval, searched for the woman.

“Water level due to rains and discharge from the dams is posing challenge to the rescuers,” Narke said.
