This common haircare mistake could be damaging your hair – and it's one many of us are guilty of. Despite using them almost daily, many people have no idea you're meant to clean your hair straighteners to avoid damaging your locks. In a TikTok clip, Sarah Brawley, who provides "easy hair tips and tutorials" to her 405,000 followers, highlighted the consequences of skipping this crucial step in your beauty routine.

She said: "This is why you're getting lots of split ends and your hair is getting greasy. Look at all this dirt. Use hand sanitiser and a cotton pad.

Rub this over the irons so dirty." Ghd hair experts recommend cleaning your straighteners every three months to prevent damage from accumulated hair products. Steve Elstein, Vice President of product development and research at ghd, remarked: "Ceramic plates of straighteners can harbour grime if not properly cleaned.

Hairspray, oils and other heavy products can build up not only on your hair, but on your tools too, on top of oils that are secreted from your scalp, which can damage your locks if the device is not regularly cleansed." However, while Sarah advocates using hand sanitiser to clean your stylers, the experts at ghd suggest a more cautious approach. Steve from ghd explained: "Unplug from mains power supply and wait till cooled down.

Wipe the outside of the ghd styler with a damp cloth. Do not use sharp or abrasive detergents or corrosive products and never immerse the appliance in water. Allow to dry for a couple of hours before plugging in and using and only do so when it is dry.

" "You should never use water or water-based cleaners to clean your styler this is a very dangerous practice. Also, we wouldn't recommend wipes unless they are organic and biodegradable since they typically contain plastic." The same goes for other styling tools such as curling wands, brushes, and combs, with advice stating: "They should be regularly cleansed to prevent product and oils from being transferred back onto your locks.

" These cleaning tips have taken TikTok by storm, with one user reacting: "I'm gonna clean mine now."Another chimed in: "OMG, I'm doing it this weekend." Meanwhile, a third user said: "That's why my hair gets oily when I straighten it.

" And another added: "This is great! I never thought about it honestly.".
