It's by no means recent, but Colchester's impressive scene for music, arts, and culture continues to grow. I've showcased thousands of events through the Keep Colchester Cool project I launched in 2009. Now, I'll bring the best events to you each week which I recommend checking out.
Here are my five recommendations for music, arts, and culture in Colchester in the week ahead. The Crunchy Frog Players are back at the Headgate Theatre this Saturday with their latest comedy sketch show, Politics, Religion, Food, and Death. This year’s performance features a mix of classic and original comedy, with a few surprises.
The cast includes Tim Young, Nicola Goodchild, Darren Gooding, David Hughes, Lisa Emily Wakely, Nigel Hildreth, and Dr Anthony Roberts. Performances are at 3pm and 8pm. Tickets are £15.
Proceeds go to the Mayor of Colchester’s Charities. On Sunday, musicians Noel Gander and Gary Choules will debut their new duo project at the Victoria Inn. Known for their work with Cold Norton, NavaCross and The Feelgood Band, the pair will combine their musical styles in an intimate set.
Starts at 5.30pm. Free admission (Donations to artists encouraged).
Ben Howard (Image: Public) Catch Grammy-nominated avant-garde band The Tiger Lillies at Colchester Arts Centre on Tuesday. Touring their Nihilism show, the post-punk pioneers delve into the absurdity of existence with their dark, Brechtian street opera style. Expect wit, wisdom, and the haunting beauty that has made them Olivier Award winners.

Get ready for laughs this Wednesday at Coda Colchester with a comedy night featuring fresh talent and seasoned acts. Jack Channell opens with sharp observational humour, followed by host Greg Edwards, keeping the energy high with quick wit. Headlining is Rachel Creeger, fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe, with her unique mix of humour and storytelling.
Doors open at 7.30pm, tickets are £10. Colchester’s Monster Florence will play a warm-up gig at Three Wise Monkeys on Friday before their forthcoming European and UK tour.
Dubbed the “Help Us Pay for Tour” tour, this show gives fans a preview of what’s ahead. The collective blends genres with hypnotic beats, raw lyrics, and sharp delivery and are undoubtedly worth catching live. Doors open at 7pm, tickets are £15.
