Wednesday, August 21, 2024 Cologne Bonn Airport is gradually easing out of its busiest travel period of the year, which lasted six and a half intense weeks. As schools in North Rhine-Westphalia resumed after the summer break, the airport has been reflecting positively on its performance. During this peak season, Cologne Bonn Airport served 1.

7 million passengers, with August 4 being the busiest day, accommodating around 43,000 travelers. The final vacation weekend saw a significant influx, with nearly 120,000 passengers passing through from August 16 to 18. “The summer vacations always mean very full terminals and particularly challenging weeks.

My special thanks go to all our employees and our partners for their commitment and their great work,” says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. “We are also expecting a high volume of passengers in the coming weeks, which will continue into the fall. In September and October, we are again expecting more than one million passengers,” says Schmid.

The allure of seaside resorts and sunny European destinations remained strong throughout this summer’s vacation season, particularly among families with children. Turkey emerged as the top destination, attracting around 500,000 travelers, followed by Spain with over 360,000 passengers and Italy with approximately 141,000. Antalya was the most popular city, drawing around 230,000 visitors, while Palma de Mallorca and Istanbul secured the second and third spots with 191,000 and 122,000 travelers, respectively.

Looking ahead, air travelers can expect excellent connectivity in the coming months. Marabu is launching a new base at the airport just in time for the fall vacations, offering regular flights to sought-after sunspots in the Canary Islands and Egypt. Additionally, Eurowings will expand its winter schedule with exciting new routes.

Starting October 28, three weekly flights will connect Cologne/Bonn with Dubai, and from November 5, three weekly flights will head to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port city..
