Jake Brosius emerged from a field loaded with former Dubuque County athletes to win the 2024 Barron Bremner Outstanding Male Athlete Award from the Coe College athletic department. Among the six finalists — three male and three female — were former Dubuque Wahlert men’s basketball player Cael Schmitt, former Dyersville Beckman softball player Heather Boeckenstedt and former Western Dubuque volleyball standout Maddy Maahs. Basketball player Caydee Kirkham won the women’s award.

Brosius, a Wahlert graduate, put together one of the best single seasons in Coe baseball history this spring in earning A-R-C position player of the year honors as well as a third-team all-American honor from the ABCA. The junior centerfielder helped the Kohawks to the A-R-C regular season and postseason titles, leading the league in hits, RBI and stolen bases while ranking second in homers, third in triples and fourth in doubles. Brosius broke the single-season RBI record at Coe and eclipsed the career mark for steals midway through his junior season.

Additionally, Brosius’ 79 hits are second all-time in a single season at Coe. He finished the season 12th in DIII in total bases, 14th in hits and 23rd in RBI. Schmitt capped off his illustrious Kohawk career with another standout season, helping Coe to the NCAA Tournament and its first tournament victory since the 1970s.

The A-R-C Defensive MVP for the second year in a row averaged 17.0 points, 3.1 assists, 2.

9 rebounds and 2.4 steals while lea.
