We expanded the four-team College Football Playoff to 12 teams at least in part because of the repetition of the same-old teams in the postseason. The five remaining unbeaten teams in the FBS combined for one playoff appearance the last 10 years. Oregon (9-0) made the CFP in 2014 – and it almost certainly will hold the top spot in the first set of rankings Tuesday.
Indiana (9-0) is the other unbeaten Big Ten team. Miami (9-0) is still perfect in the ACC. BYU (8-0) is the only unbeaten team in the Big 12.
Army (8-0) is the last unbeaten Group of 5 team. Did we expand the playoff so the usual suspects could still get in? We will see how the committee views those unbeaten teams. Keep an eye on these indicators.
How many one-loss SEC teams will be ranked ahead of Miami? Texas and Georgia had close calls in the fourth quarter the last two weeks, but they escaped. The Hurricanes were penalized after beating Virginia Tech and Cal and have not faced a ranked team all season. Will Miami be ahead of Texas and Georgia? We don't think so, but keep an eye on whether the committee slips in a third SEC team like Tennessee ahead of the Hurricanes.
That will give clues about how the committee perceives the ACC race. Georgia beat Clemson 34-3 in Week 1. That is going to be held against the entire conference and it could mean one bid for the conference.
What will the ranking disparity be with BYU? The Big 12 champion will get an automatic bid, and that No. 4 seed is going to get scrutinized b.
