Defence Institute of Advanced Technology dropped from 57 to 63, and COEP Technological University (COEPTU) fell from 73 to 77. A spokesperson from COEPTU said, “We are 77th with a score of 48 this year. Since the number of participating institutes is increasing every year, in spite of the rise in marks in almost all the parameters as compared to the previous year, our ranking has dropped from 73rd last year with a total score of 46.

89. Of the five from Maharashtra, we are one of the "state-funded" institutions to make it in the list of top 100, competing with others which are either centrally funded IITs, NITs, universities or institutes of eminence and ranked higher than us in the list." NIRF, approved by the ministry of education, was launched in September 2015.

It provides a methodology to rank institutions based on parameters such as ‘teaching, learning and resources’, ‘research and professional practices’, ‘graduation outcomes’, ‘outreach and inclusivity’, and ‘perception’. Other factors include infrastructure, facilities for differently abled persons, percentage of students from other states and countries, percentage of women students and faculty, and percentage of economically and disadvantaged students. Two colleges from Kolhapur and Aurangabad got ranks— YB Chavan College of Pharmacy, Aurangabad ranked 76 and Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Pharmacy, Kolhapur was at 80.

SPPU came third in the newly introduced state public university category, COEPTU ranked 33 and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad was in 46th place. SPPU’s vice-chancellor Suresh Gosavi said the university has approximately maintained its rank and efforts are being made to recruit faculty for a better performance.

He added, “MoUs signed with industry and international universities will contribute to the consultancy, patents’ and research and strengthen SPPU’s position in NIRF. SPPU is at number 3 in the state public university category. It is a huge achievement, resulting from the continuous pursuit of excellence and consistent effort.
