Crown Gospel Music Awards founder Zanele Mbokazi Zanele Mbokazi, who was battling lung cancer has sadly passed away. Jabulani Langa NEWS Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, the founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards, has died. According to a statement released by her husband, Mpendulo Nkambule, on social media platform X, the legendary radio and TV presenter passed away at Parklands Hospital in Durban in the early hours of Monday morning.

Mbokazi-Nkambule had been battling lung cancer.“It is with a heavy heart that we, the Nkambule and Mbokazi family, announce the passing of our dearly beloved Ms Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards and Ukhozi FM radio personality," read the statement. In May, Ukhozi FM listeners took to social media to wish Mbokazi-Nkambule a speedy recovery after she fell ill while on air the previous month.

It was later confirmed by her husband that Mbokazi-Nkambule had been diagnosed with lung cancer. At the time Nkambule said: Following her difficulty on air, we took her to the hospital to find out what was wrong.

Initially, she had pains, we prayed, and they stopped, but we wanted to find out what was wrong with the flesh. The doctors checked her, took her to the theatre for an operation, and found that she had lung cancer. In June, gospel musicians gathered at the Sandton Assemblies of God church to pray for Mbokazi-Nkambule’s recovery.

The prayer gathering was organized with the help of musicians Sbu Banda, Vovee Batala, Soso Maholwana and his wife Thembi. The organisers said they felt it was important to give Mbokazi-Nkambule her flowers while she was still alive, just as she had given several musicians well-deserved glory while unleashing a number of new talents. He said everyone had been shaken by the situation in which the founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards found herself. He said: We know her heart and her desires, so we still want her to be with us and continue the work she’s started. Sis Zanele is a visionary.

We still want her plans and visions so that everyone will grow and have direction. We still love and need her very much. Following the announcement, social media was instantly abuzz with messages of condolences from South Africans including politicians and media personalities.
