NEW DELHI: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan allegedly shot himself dead with his service weapon at Surat International Airport, police informed on Friday. Kisan Singh, 32-year-old who hailed from Jaipur, shot himself in stomach in the airport washroom and was declared dead by hospital authorities, the police said. "He was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors declared him dead," NV Bharwad, inspector of Dumas police station said.
This comes only days after CISF announced that there was about a 40% decline in suicides within the force from 25 in 2023 to 15 in 2024. Since 2020, a total of 730 suicides have been reported across various CAPFs, Assam Rifles, and NSG, with the CISF contributing 105 of these cases. The suicide rate in the CISF, which had reached a high of 18.
1 per lakh personnel in 2022, decreased to 16.9 per lakh in 2023 and further dropped to 9.8 per lakh in 2024.
