Christian Eriksen appeared to openly question Erik ten Hag’s decision to substitute him during Manchester United ’s disappointing draw with FC Twente. Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall had an inspired night to ensure that United kicked off their Europa League campaign in underwhelming fashion.
Eriksen had been the hero of the night when he blasted a loose ball into the top corner to give United the lead. The high from his third goal in a week did not last, however, as he was robbed in possession, allowing Lammers to sprint through and beat Andre Onana at his near post with a powerful finish. The equaliser came in the 68th minute and Ten Hag reacted 11 minutes later, making a triple substitution to introduce Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount .
Eriksen was hooked alongside Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee, but the Dane looked shocked and disappointed with the call. Eriksen was seen looking over to the technical area in disbelief before pointing to himself and standing with his hands on his hips. While Ten Hag briefed Mainoo, it fell on Hojlund to confirm the United manager’s decision to Eriksen, who eventually dragged himself off the pitch.
