MIAMI GARDENS — Welcome to your future, Miami Dolphins fans. Unfortunately, history is repeating. In the past, the problem has been that the Dolphins had a bad plan that was poorly executed.
The 2024 season and the Mike McDaniel era are both headed down that same path. Opponents have figured out this Dolphins offense. It’s wholly and entirely based on getting the ball to wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
The league figured that out in midway through the 2022 season. It occurred to me in December 2022. Teams are now keeping two safeties deep, one on each half of the field, to prevent the long ball to Hill.
Basically, they double cover him. Problem solved. Consequently, McDaniel’s offense, as things stand now, is no better than the Wildcat , the gimmicky offense the Dolphins famously used in 2008, but was quickly extinguished leaguewide a couple of years later.
You wonder why no changes are being made to the Dolphins’ offense this season. No tweaks. No adjustments.
The writing has been on the wall . The Dolphins, who I have said have underachieved under McDaniel , have lost seven of their past 10 games going back to last season. That span includes two home losses to Tennessee, one with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and one without him.
In the Dolphins’ past seven games they’re 1-6 and averaged 12.1 points per game. In the Dolphins’ past seven games they haven’t scored three touchdowns in a game a single time.
They’ve scored two touchdowns in a game just twice, in that 5.
