Coldplay frontman Chris Martin gave Australia an unexpected farewell as he boarded a private jet to leave the country. The British musician dropped to his knees on the tarmac and kissed the ground, appearing to farewell the country following eight successful concerts across Melbourne and Sydney. Martin, 47, was seen at Sydney airport on Monday interacting with fans who gathered to farewell the singer. He then headed towards his private jet to take him to New Zealand to commence the next leg of Coldplay’s world tour. Just before climbing the jet’s stairs, he quickly dropped to the floor and kissed the tarmac before jumping back up and continuing towards the plane.
It’s unknown what the kiss meant for Martin — whether it was simply a loving gesture or if he was sad to be leaving the country. The singer kept a low profile in a grey beanie, headphones, a white long-sleeved tee, track pants and Coldplay’s signature “LOVE” badge. The UK band’s first Australian concert was in Melbourne on October 30 and their final Sydney show was Sunday, November 10.
It was the first time Coldplay toured in Melbourne and Sydney since 2016, despite a whirlwind trip for a show in Perth last year. Perth missed out this time around. But Martin revealed there was a good reason for the eight-year break between shows in Australia’s biggest cities.
