Pune: OBC activists have objected to the state cabinet ’s decision of extending the tenure of municipal councils’ chairpersons from the existing two-and-a-half years to five years. The activists said a case related to the OBC quota in civic bodies was pending before the Supreme Court . And the state’s decision before the SC verdict in the case would impact OBC representation in civic bodies.
They also warned Mahayuti to rollback the decision or face consequences in the upcoming assembly polls. Pune-based OBC activist Mangesh Sasane, who has been actively involved in the OBC quota agitation, said, “No elections have been held in civic bodies in the past three years because of the case in the Supreme Court over the OBC quota in the civic bodies. However, elections to 106 municipal councils in the state were already announced and therefore, the court allowed the polls to take place without the OBC quota.
” “The tenure of all these chairpersons in all these 106 municipal councils was to get over by Aug-end. The SC decision is likely soon but state govt, instead of waiting for the verdict, took a decision of extending chairpersons’ tenure to five years. Now, even if the SC gives a verdict in favour of the OBC quota, the OBC members will not be able to become chairpersons in all these 106 municipal councils for at least two-and-a-half more years.
