Ah yes, the streaming wars: the content battle between companies like Netflix, Disney+, Max, Prime Video, and Chick-fil-A. You know, everyone's favorite streaming brands. I wish that was a joke, but according to a Deadline report today, Chick-fil-A is planning to move "aggressively" into the entertainment space with a streaming platform and a slate of original content.
Per Deadline's sources, the poultry-based fast food chain is already in talks with some major production companies, "including some of the studios, to create family-friendly shows, particularly in the unscripted space," meaning you might be getting some new nuggets of reality TV soon. It's also reportedly considering licensing and acquiring content. What's more, you won't even have to wait that long for these chickens to come home to roost: Deadline reports that the plan is for the service to launch later this year.
Chick-fil-A is seemingly shelling out around $400k for each half-hour of the unscripted series. One of the projects already ordered reportedly include a family-friendly game show, which has apparently landed a 10-episode greenlight. Scripted and animated projects, too, are also being considered.
Chick-fil-A has not commented publicly on the reported plans of a streaming service. And while jumping off from fried chicken sandwiches to a streaming platform might seem like an odd move, the Deadline report notes that Chick-fil-A joins the likes of other unexpected companies, like Lyft and Airbnb, to get into the original content game. Still, I have questions.
Will the streaming service work on Sundays? Will there be some sort of weird, Survivor-esque competition series to see which chickens get turned into nuggets?
