Monday, August 26, 2024 Chicago O’Hare International Airpor t ranks fifth globally for connectivity in 2024, with flights to 270 destinations, according to Cirium’s latest data. Chicago O’Hare International Airport consistently ranks among the world’s busiest airports each year. According to the latest data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, O’Hare ranks as the fifth most connected airport worldwide.

Several other U.S. airports also appear in the top 20 , alongside major international hubs.



The 2024 ‘Most Connected Airports’ list from Cirium highlights some of the world’s busiest airports, with Chicago O’Hare (ORD) taking the fifth spot, offering flights to 270 destinations . The top 20 airports feature a diverse range of locations from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as three additional airports from the United States. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) ranks sixth with 261 connections.

The other two U.S. airports in the list are Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), which holds the ninth spot with 237 connections, and Denver International Airport (DEN), which narrowly misses the top 10, coming in at 11th place with 229 connections.

Among the world’s most connected airports, Istanbul Airport (IST) tops the list with 309 destinations, largely due to its role as the primary hub for Turkish Airlines, which operates an extensive global network covering over 270 destinations. Following closely is Frankfurt Airport (FRA), serving 296 destinations in the first half of the year, with Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) ranking third, offering flights to 282 destinations. Interestingly, no airport from the United Kingdom made it into the top 10, with London Heathrow Airport (LHR) placing 12th, serving 221 destinations .

London Gatwick (LGW) is ranked 14th, tied with Madrid, both offering 218 destinations. Notably, in the first half of 2023, Heathrow was ranked 8th. Dubai International Airport (DXB) holds the sixth position with 269 destinations , while Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) ranks 8th with 243 destinations .

The top 20 airports list includes 10 from Europe, four each from the U.S. and China, and two from the Middle East.

O’Hare is one of the two primary airports serving the Chicago area. It features eight runways and accommodates scheduled flights from approximately 50 airlines. According to OAG, it ranks as the seventh-busiest airport globally this month by seat capacity, offering 4,393,280 seats , and is the third busiest in the United States.

United Airlines is the largest carrier operating out of Chicago O’Hare, followed by American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Delta, and Southwest. While O’Hare regularly handles some of the world’s largest aircraft, it also has an extensive network of regional jet operations, making it the top airport globally for regional jet flights. With over 27,000 average daily roundtrips, regional jets account for 40% of the airport’s operations, with American Eagle being the most prominent player in this segment.
