Every day an average of three children under 13 were killed and nearly 450 were injured in cars, SUVs, pickups and vans in a recent year, according to federal data, and nearly 40 % of those children killed in car crashes were unrestrained.
To draw attention to this largely preventable tragedy, and to raise awareness of how parents and caregivers can help keep children safe in vehicles, Child Passenger Safety Week is recognized each September –this year through September 21. Car seats and booster seats provide protection for infants and children in a crash, but it’s important to make sure a child is in the right car or booster seat for his or her age and size – and that the seat is installed correctly.
