Charli XCX explained why “ SNL ” viewers shouldn’t sweat it if they don’t recognize her or know about her critically-acclaimed album “Brat.” “Don’t worry if you don’t, there is nothing wrong with being straight,” quipped the singer and queer icon in the show’s opening monologue this weekend. Charli — who served as both host and musical guest — later reflected on her “crazy experience” with “Brat Summer,” a trend that sparked memes often centered on her album’s light green artwork.
She defined “brat” as an “attitude” or a “vibe” before using the term to discuss “Martha,” a documentary film about Martha Stewart that premiered on Netflix late last month. “When Martha gets mad about an old magazine article and she says that she’s glad the journalist who wrote it is dead, that is brat,” said Charli of the home decor guru. Stewart, who was found guilty for her role in an insider trading scheme back in 2004, claimed in the documentary that a “lady” at the New York Post wrote “horrible things” about her during her trial.
“But she is dead now, thank goodness. And nobody has to put up with the crap she was writing all the time,” said Stewart of the writer, who she did not name in the documentary. Andrea Peyser later identified herself as the journalist in question and began a column for the Post with the line, “I’m alive, bitch!” “That is extremely brat,” Charli said.
