Herrera is an acknowledged expert in the entire coffee making process. In celebration of National Coffee Day on Sept. 29, Luis Carlos Herrera, Head Barista at Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort in Costa Rica , is sharing his recommendations for preparing the perfect cup of coffee using one of his preferred methods, the v60.

Herrera is an acknowledged expert in the entire coffee making process, from planting and harvesting the beans to the art of brewing the perfect cup. Known as the "golden bean," Costa Rican coffee has long been revered for its exceptional quality. Herrera believes that coffee, when made correctly, does not need added sweetener or creamer to taste delicious, and he travels to the country’s premier coffee-growing regions to hand-select the best beans for the resort’s coffee program.

He says, "Starting the day with coffee is essential to deal with the day to day. But how you prepare it should be a daily ritual full of mindfulness to prepare the spirit, face the challenges and put your best face forward to a world full of people who don't know how to prepare coffee. Make a difference.

Do it right." Coffee cocktails are a popular choice at the resort. Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort elevates their food and beverage offerings with an extraordinary menu of the finest Costa Rican coffee.

Herrera connects directly with the dedicated farmers, allowing him to curate three exceptional coffee varieties that embody the essence of Costa Rica: Bruna Region: The Alvarado Fonseca Family’s honey-processed coffee, offering aromatic, sweet notes of caramel and black tea. Santa María in the Dota Region: The Marín family’s naturally roasted coffee, featuring a whole bean fermentation process, resulting in a brew with sweeter notes and medium acidity. División in Pérez Zeledón: Orígenes coffee, a blend of SL28, ET47, Geisha and San Roque varieties, honey-processed to deliver flavors of dark chocolate, caramel and plum.

He shares his vast coffee knowledge in a “Becoming a Barista Class,” available to all guests. This lively 90-minute session allows coffee enthusiasts to learn about the origins of coffee and the art of preparation, creating a deeper connection with this cherished beverage and its rich heritage in Costa Rica. Herrera offers the following instructions for the perfect cup of coffee: 1.

Heat water until almost boiling, then wait at least 45 seconds for the water to cool slightly, before introducing the water to the fresh coffee grounds. 2. Place the paper filter into the cone shaped dropper.

Next, rinse it with hot water to remove paper flavor and scent. Discard the resulting water into the sink. 3.

Once the paper filter is clean, add the coffee (1 full heaping teaspoon per cup). Pour the water slowly, just enough to make all the coffee wet. This will remove all the CO2 that coffee gained during the roasting process.

Wait 20-30 seconds until all the water pours through. 4. Do not try to make the process faster by stirring the coffee.

Quality takes time. 5. When the water finishes dripping, it will be ready to be served.

Just remove the ceramic cone from top, pour your perfectly crafted coffee into a cup and enjoy. Additional Coffee News The Aspen outpost brings the best of Felix to the Rockies. Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection, Aspen, CO Felix Roasting Co.
