Friday, August 23, 2024 On Saturday, August 17, over 25,000 people gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol Grounds for IndiaFest 2024, an annual celebration organized by the non-profit India Association of Minnesota. This vibrant festival offered attendees a unique chance to honor India’s Independence Day and immerse themselves in the rich and diverse culture of Asian Indians. The 2020 U.

S. Census revealed that the Asian Indian population is one of Minnesota’s largest and fastest-growing communities, with IndiaFest standing as the second-largest Asian Indian festival in the Midwest. “It’s important that we share our culture with each other and celebrate freely with our community here in Minnesota,” said Meena Bharti, President of the India Association of Minnesota.



“Additionally, providing the chance for people outside of the Asian Indian community to explore and experience our culture in true Indian fashion is a key opportunity for our organization.” Festival highlights included sampling a wide array of Indian cuisine, enjoying lively music and dance performances featuring award-winning Indian singer Nazia Alam, and exploring cultural exhibits. Attendees also participated in traditional games, engaged in family-friendly entertainment, and took part in interactive activities like a sari-tying competition.

An Indian Bazaar offered handicrafts, jewelry, and clothing for sale. The event culminated in a traditional Bollywood Night, where the stage came alive, and the crowd danced the night away in a joyful celebration of Asian Indian culture. “Seeing our communities come together to celebrate our heritage is a privilege to behold, and one we don’t take lightly,” says Bharti.

“From those who are connecting with their own Indian heritage to those who may be experiencing the culture for the first time, it’s our mission to bridge our communities and give everyone a true experience of India, right here in Minnesota.”.
