Carolinabis, a company that started selling wholesale THC flavored waters about two years ago, has opened a retail shop in Clemmons. The Carolinabis store is at 6355 Jessie Lane, next to The Playground Golf and Sports Bar, on the back side of Clemmons Town Center. “People kept asking us if we had a store.

And we also wanted to get into edibles,” said Shawn King, who co-owns Carolinabis with his wife, Karen King. The store sells a variety of carbonated and uncarbonated waters, plus baked goods, gummies and a few other items. (The Hempshop, also in Clemmons Town Center, sells gummies and a few beverages, but no baked goods.

) The Kings formerly ran a microgreens business in Boonville from 2015 to 2017. When federal legislation in 2018 allowed people to grow hemp, the Kings made the switch. They grow all of the hemp plants used in their products.

Before getting into the flavored waters last fall, Carolinabis produced flowered buds, muscle gels, oils, and gummies - but sold them online. The Carolinabis store, open Wednesday through Sunday, sells the 16-ounce bottles of THC flavored waters that it sells to bars and restaurants. It also has half-gallon and gallon containers of the waters.

The waters have zero calories, carbs or sugars, but in the store customers can choice to add a Monin syrup, available in such flavors as pineapple, raspberry and cherry. The store also has Monin Energy Boost, a liquid energy supplement that can be added to the drinks.

As far as food – sometimes referred to as edible cannabis or marijuana edibles - Carolinabis is selling Jell-O shots ($4), and brownies and cakes. The Jell-O shots come in a variety of fruit flavors, such as berry blue, strawberry and watermelon. The shots and baked goods are rotated.

“We’ll always have brownies, and we’ll always have some kind of cake,” Karen said. Recent choices include salted-caramel and peanut-butter brownies, and lemon pound and strawberry cake. The shop also sells a Carolinabis’ other products, including flowers, gummies and muscle gel.

New products include a THC cooking oil, Tranquila and Weedskey. The latter are non-alcoholic, THC-infused beverages – one flavored to resemble tequila and the other to resemble whiskey. The shop has several couches as as well as stools and tables, so people can eat or drink their purchases.

“This isn’t a head shop. It’s more like a lounge,” Karen said. The space was previously used as a conference room by The Playground, so there is a pass-through door between the two businesses.

Carolinabis keeps that door opens and keep the store later on nights when The Playground has a concert – usually Fridays and Saturdays. Karen also is using The Playground’s new kitchen to bake all her baked goods. Jessica Manning, a co-owner of The Playground, said that they built the kitchen in June in the front corner of the 11,000-square-foot space, to start offering food to guests.

The menu includes such snacks as flatbreads, tacos, nachos and hot dogs. The Kings have said they got into this business because they believe in the potential medicinal properties of hemp-derived products. They cannot by law make health claims on their product packaging, but Karen King said that the waters are popular with people who have given up alcohol.

Shawn King said he has personally seen benefits. Three years ago, he said, his doctors told him he had about 18 months to live because he has stage four terminal cancer. “These (hemp products) have helped so much with the pain, and with my appetite – when the doctors wanted to give me all kinds of drugs that I thought did more harm than good,” he said.

“I don’t think I’d be standing here today without these products.” [email protected] (336) 727-7394 @mhastingswsj With our weekly newsletter packed with the latest in everything food.
