Five people have put their names forward to stand in the by-election, which will take place on Thursday, September 12.

The by-election was called after the former councillor Mairéad Healy resigned. Ms Healy had originally been elected to the city council standing for the Labour Party . However, she left the party to sit as an independent candidate in October last year in response to comments made at the time by the national party leader Keir Starmer over the Israel and Gaza conflict.

Ms Healy said at the time that she had made the decision to resign the Labour Party whip after “much soul searching and tears”. She continued to represent Romsey ward as an independent councillor until resigning earlier this month. The five candidates standing in the upcoming by-election are: Beth Gardiner-Smith, Labour Party; Zak Karimjee, Green Party ; Rob Nelson, Conservative Party ; John Walmsley, Liberal Democrat.

The city council has advised that people who would normally vote at Romsey Mill will instead be voting at Mill Road Baptist Church for this by-election, as the usual location is not available. Anyone wishing to vote through the post will need to apply to do so before 5pm on Wednesday, August 28.

People casting their vote in person will need to show an accepted form of photo ID to polling station staff before they will be issued with their ballot paper. Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for a voter authority certificate, but must do so before 5pm on September 4, in order to receive it in time to vote in the by-election.
