Canadian weightlifter Andrew Pretty is satisfied with his bronze medal win in the 96kg senior men’s category of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday. Speaking to SUNsports, Pretty said this is because of his poor preparation for the event. “It was great and I feel like it’s taken a long time to get here as it turned out better than I thought,” he said.

“I’d like to thank and dedicate this win to my wife Deagan Pretty.” Pretty said he had the best experience in Fiji and it was his first visit. “It’s beautiful and everyone here is so nice,” he said.

“It’ll be nice to come here for a vacation sometime.” Pretty acknowledged the support he received from his team-mates and coaches. “I’ve competed in the senior nationals in Canada prior to the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship tournament,” he said.

“I might compete in the senior nationals in May next year and I’ll try to get my hips healthier.” Pretty said he was influenced by his first coach to join the sport. “It’s awesome to see youths and juniors in any competitions.

The sport is hard to do but if you stick to it you’ll be able to do what you can.” Feedback: ioane.asioli@fijisun.
