The annual Burning Man festival's opening day was marred by tragedy after one festivalgoer reportedly died. Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 11:29 a. m.

on Sunday August 25, after receiving a "report of an unresponsive individual" at the festival. The organizers confirmed in a statement that despite emergency responders' efforts to save the person, their attempts were unsuccessful. This comes after ticket sales for the event remained slow in the lead up to the festivities that take place in Black Rock City, Nevada .



Last year's Burning Man festival also became infamous after heavy rain led to the historic flooding and chaos. In a somber announcement, the Burning Man Project stated: "It is with heavy hearts that Burning Man Project confirms the death of a participant in Black Rock City in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this loss. The participant has been identified by the Pershing County Sheriff's Office." As a woman tragically dies on the first day of the Burning Man Festival, police have initiated an investigation.

" The Pershing County Sheriff's Office is investigating a death at Burning Man, awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. Jerry Allen with the Pershing County Sheriff remarked: "The name of the participant is being withheld at this time, until the decedent's next of kin can be notified." Allen shared his condolences, saying: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the decedent.

This is the first reported death on the playa this year and unfortunately it has happened on day one." The Reno Gazette Journal reports that while this is not the first fatality at the annual even—which moved to the Black Rock Desert in 1990—multiple incidents have occurred, including accidental deaths and suicides. In a prior year, attendee Leon Reece passed away after he was discovered unresponsive, despite no direct correlation to weather conditions complicating deputies' response and investigation efforts.
