CLUTE The Brazoswood Bucs might not have won a game this season, but the players are taking the time to lead future winners and set a standard for the football program for generations to come. A handful of Buc players have volunteered to coach for the inaugural Legacy League Football, a six-week competition between four teams of fifth- and sixth-grade students playing 7-on-7 football. The first five weeks take place on Saturdays.

All practices and games take place at Slade Field in Clute. The idea derived from Justin Phillips and Kathryn Adams Phillips, parents of Brazoswood quarterback Noah Phillips. After Hurricane Beryl, Brazoswood players were tasked with raising money for the football program.



Meanwhile, the couple brainstormed ways to raise money for their kids. That discussion eventually led to a different route: finding a way for players to give back to a community that supports them. The Phillipses targeted fifth- and sixth-grade students because this age group includes kids who are not at the middle school level yet but are aged out of youth football or parents are uncomfortable putting them in tackle football.

“We knew there was a need for youth football programs in our area that weren’t necessarily tackle leagues because not everybody feels comfortable putting their little ones in tackle football at this age,” Kathryn Adams Phillips said. “We thought this could be the way the boys serve this community in a way that they already feel equipped and confident .
