As many households are feeling the financial squeeze, one straightforward way to save some cash is by rethinking how you organise your fridge's contents. Not only could this make your appliance run more efficiently and reduce energy bills, but it could also extend the lifespan of your increasingly costly groceries. Jennifer Shaw, an expert from Plumbworld , advised: "Having a system when it comes to unloading your shopping is very effective," reports the Express .

"Being organised means you know where to find things and are less likely to have food that you've forgotten about languishing at the back of your fridge." This not only reduces food waste, which is beneficial for the environment, but also great for your wallet. Shaw added: "Another good rule to follow is to avoid overfilling your fridge.

"Piling items on top of each other will hinder air circulation between your goods and cold air reaching everywhere it needs to. This means your fridge has to work harder and your food will spoil quicker." The specialist highlighted the importance of where you place items in your fridge.

Explaining a common mistake, Shaw stated: "This area is warmer than the rest of the fridge, which could be the reason your milk isn't lasting very long." She recommends storing milk in the main part of the fridge for greater longevity. Shaw also suggests that eggs should be kept in the main compartment rather than the door racks, while condiments and drinks are fine in the door.

She elaborated on the different temperature zones within a fridge, noting: "Fridges have sections that are colder and warmer than others, which helps because different foods keep better at different temperatures." For meat and fish, Shaw advises storing them at the back of the fridge to maintain a colder environment, potentially using a thermometer to monitor the temperature. Additionally, Shaw explained the rationale behind the separate fruit and vegetable drawer at the bottom of the fridge: "They should be stored in their dedicated compartments because this part of the fridge isn't as dry as the rest, meaning it should keep everything fresher for longer," she concluded.
