A small region of Italy has been opened up to UK holidaymakers with British Airways now offering direct flights to this gorgeous alternative to the Amalfi Coast. As of 2025, with British Airways will launch a new service from London Gatwick to Italy's Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport - just an hour and a half drive from the stunning Maratea, located along the rugged coast of the Basilicata region. Maratea is a beautiful part of Italy, famed for its coastline and rich history.
It offers similar landscapes to the Amalfi Coast but with far fewer crowds. This quaint region has only 5,000 inhabitants, sprawled over 70 square kilometres. But just because it’s quiet, doesn’t mean it’s boring.
Maratea is jam-packed with things to do, and no visit would be complete without a stroll through its gorgeous Old Town. This charming maze of cobblestoned streets has no fewer than 44 churches to marvel at, perfect for those who want a bit of culture with their holiday. There’s also plenty of artisan shops selling everything from cheeses through to local wines and meats.
If you prefer a slightly more challenging walk, you can tackle the hike to Maratea’s Christ the Redeemer statue which perches atop Monte San Biagio. The hike takes 90 minutes, but if you're feeling slightly more relaxed you can also drive up. Whichever you choose, you’ll be inspired by the beautiful panoramic views from the top of the mountain.
Closer to sea level there’s Maratea’s harbour which was once a quiet.
