Travellers have been warned to expect longer queues than usual at border control points across Heathrow terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 this weekend. As many as 650 workers who are part of the PCS union will take part in the strike with members working across each of the airport’s four terminals. The strike is “likely to cause serious disruption to travellers using Heathrow,” PCS union general secretary Fran Heathcote warned.

The dispute comes after disagreements with bosses over changes to roster arrangements, with the union saying the employer’s “lack of flexibility” has already caused 160 staff to leave. Don't miss..

Despite this, passengers heading to the airport this weekend have been asked to use e-gates if they're able to.

The Home Office also recommended that travellers "check the latest advice from operators before travel". Travel woes aren’t confined to strike action here in the UK this weekend - with travellers to Portugal facing disruption as ground staff stake a walk-out. Staff across the country will down tools tomorrow, with a massive knock-on effect for holidaymakers planning to visit the tourist hotspot.

Porto and Lisbon are expected to be the worst affected by the strike, which starts on Saturday and will last until Sunday, September 1. The union representing ground staff has warned that there will be delays and "numerous flight cancellations". Don't miss.

Strikers are protesting at "the existence of base salaries below the national minimum wage" and the Portuguese Transport Workers' Union has said the industrial action will lead to "severe constraints" at airports across the country. Travellers with flights booked to or from Portugal over the strike period have been advised to contact their airlines to confirm flights are still scheduled. While Portuguese carriers such as TAP Air Portugal will face the majority of the disruption, easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, British Airways and Vueling also operate flights to and from Portugal.

An easyJet spokesperson told the Sun: "As our ground handler in Portugal isn’t impacted by the strike action we are currently planning to operate our schedule as planned but would always advise all customers to check the status of their flights on Flight Tracker at easyJet.com for the latest updates." Ryanair said it too is unlikely to be affected by the strikes.

A Vueling spokesperson told the paper: "Vueling's top priority is to mitigate the impact of this industrial action on our operations and our passengers. This situation is outside Vueling’s control, and we are therefore closely monitoring the situation to ensure we can meet any operational or customer needs." British Airways and Wizz Air have been contacted for comment.
