Minister for Health Shannon Fentiman said the move to contact families came from an ‘abundance of caution’.

Letters were sent to parents, although an investigation into the quality of the vaccines had not yet concluded. A spokesperson for Darling Downs Health said some vaccines may have been exposed to temperatures below the recommended range, but that the medicine would not adversely affect babies receiving them.

Minister for Health Shannon Fentiman said the move to contact families came from an “abundance of caution” and that newborns who received potentially ineffective vaccines would have since had follow-up shots. Both the refrigerator and monitoring devices have since been replaced. 5.

30am Queensland Health begins recycling programs for common landfill item By Catherine Strohfeldt More than 24 kilograms of medication packaging have been recycled through the Queensland Children’s Hospital blister pack recycling scheme launched three months ago. Currently, most recycling facilities cannot process the item and an estimated 2 billion packs end up in landfill each year.

Children’s Health Queensland funded the program with revenue from the hospital’s containers-for-change program, and posted collection points in all wards from April this year. 5.28am Red Cross reports low national blood supplies from five-year high in cancellations Thousands of blood donations are needed in the next week to replenish Australian Red Cross Lifeblood stock, as high numbers of cold and flu cases have affected winter donations.

Over the winter period, a reported 20 per cent of donors have called in sick, resulting in the highest percentage of cancellations due to illness in five years. Red Cross Lifeblood asked for 8500 additional donations Australia-wide before August 26, with 1000 coming from Queensland, where supplies are low in A and O blood types. People presenting cold and flu symptoms are required to wait a minimum of seven days after fully recovery before donating.
