Who and where: Sherilyn and Barry Krell of Olivette at the American Military cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, France, where they visited the grave of the ONE Jewish soldier from St. Louis who died in battle on June 15, 1944. The trip: They took a cruise on the River Seine out of Paris on the Amadeus Diamond.

The trip was co-sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. David Eisenhower (grandson of Dwight D. Eisenhower) and David’s wife, Julie Nixon Eisenhower (daughter of President Richard Nixon) were the escorts and guest lecturers on the cruise.

They visited several important sections of the Normandy beaches, including Pointe du Hoc, the rocky promontory where the German army was embedded, and Omaha Beach, where the Allied forces landed on June 6, 1944. Travel tip: “We had contacted the national office of Jewish War Veterans before the trip so we went prepared with the name and location of this grave. The staff at the Visitors Center was very helpful by driving us directly to the gravesite in a golf cart (saving us steps) and sending us home with a big folder of information about the battlefields.
