A man has died days after being shot by NSW Police officers in Sydney . Brendan Leiby, 26, was shot by officers after allegedly driving a luxury SUV towards them about 12.10pm on Friday in an underground carpark on Lane St in Wentworthville, near Parramatta.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Leiby’s mother, who did not want her name used, said she is devastated by the incident and believes her son — who was a father of three with another baby on the way — did not deserve such an outcome. Before his death, she revealed Leiby was in a coma and possibly facing a lifetime of disability.



“When police entered an underground carpark of a unit block, the stolen vehicle was allegedly driven at them,” NSW Police said. “Police discharged their firearms, injuring two men inside the stolen car.” Officers performed first aid until paramedics arrived and treated the men at the site of the shooting.

Leiby was shot in the neck during the confrontation and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. His 34-year-old passenger was also wounded, suffering a gunshot wound to the leg, and was taken in a stable condition to Westmead Hospital. The officers were not physically injured.

Leiby died in hospital on Wednesday. NSW Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, which is also subject to an independent review. Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Dunstan pre.
