An 11-year-old Irish girl who died on a family holiday in Spain after she fell from the seventh floor of a hotel in Puerto de Alcudia in the north east of Majorca has been named as Clodagh Phelan from Co Wicklow. The youngster died at around 6.30am this morning following an accident in the all-inclusive three-star resort Club Mac Hotel.
Paramedics rushed to the assistance of Clodagh and attempted to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Clodagh's relatives were said to be sleeping when she went out on the terrace and fell to her death in circumstances police are investigating. She was a member of Parnell Athletics Club in Rathdrum in Co Wicklow and in a Facebook post the club said that they were "truly heartbroken to share the devastating news" of the passing of juvenile athlete Clodagh.
"Clodagh tragically passed away following an accident on holidays. Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics," the statement read. "Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
As a mark of respect and to allow us all time to grieve the loss of Clodagh, there will be no training until further notice." Glendalough AC, Roundwood and District Athletic Club, Aughrim GAA and Croghan Athletics Club were among the clubs that today also extended their condolences to the Phelan family. Glenealy Camogie Club also said that their "thoughts and prayers" were with Clodagh’s parents Liam and Valerie during this "unimaginable heartbreaking time.
" It is understood that Clodagh was an "all rounder" when it came to sports. She was a promising athlete, as well as a talented football and camogie player. Clodagh is understood to have fallen around 65ft and landed on the roof of a first-floor restaurant.
A regional emergency coordination centre has offered the youngster’s family trauma counsellors. A Civil Guard spokesman in Majorca confirmed: “We are investigating the death of an 11-year-old Irish girl who died after plunging from a seventh-floor terrace at a hotel in Alcudia. The first emergency calls came in around 6.
