That’s Bizarre was opened by Michael Kouspetris and his late wife Kathy on Queen’s Road in 1971. The shop began as a women’s fashion boutique before switching to gifts and party supplies in the 1980s. After two decades of success, Michael and Kathy expanded and opened a second That’s Bizarre in Broadway, Leigh.
That’s Bizarre developed a massive community following over the years, and recent news of the shop’s closure prompted an outpouring of support. Thursday saw the shop’s last day of trading. Owner, Michael, spent the day packing up his merchandise and spending time with loyal customers and former employees.
Michael’s daughter, Zoe, is continuing her father’s work at That’s Bizarre’s Leigh shop. She said: “The response to our little shop closing has been amazing. “We have been so touched by the love and memories that people have shared with us.
“Michael has had many people popping in sending cards giving gifts and offering kind words and . “We are grateful to have had the opportunity to offer so much to our community over the years and hopefully that will continue for years to come in the Leigh-on-sea shop.” At the time, he reflected on the changes he’d seen over his decades long career and predicated that he may shed a dear as he left the shop for the last time.
That’s Bizarre’s Leigh shop will continue to operate on Queens Road..
