The inspiration for the biggest movie flop of the year is getting a long awaited sequel, at a very awkward time, as Borderlands returns. It’s clear the original idea here, was that the Borderlands movie would come out first and then a few weeks later Gearbox would triumphantly announce the game Borderlands 4, the first mainline entry in five years. The game reveal was the very first thing during the Gamescom Opening Night Live event on Tuesday night (the very last was the announcement that Indiana Jones And The Great Circle is coming to PlayStation 5 ) but the teaser trailer explained almost nothing.
The teaser trailer shows a mysterious meteorite crashing into an equally mysterious planet, as a robotic arm picks it up in first person, only for the object to be revealed as a Psycho mask – as warn by one of the game’s major factions and as usually featured on the box art. Perhaps there’s a clue as to who the arm belongs to, that hardcore fans will recognise, but on the face of it that’s all there was to the trailer, other than the release date of sometime in 2025. There’s no indication of when in 2025, but given it’s only just being teased now the obvious guess is probably relatively late in the year.
The new sequel will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC (and perhaps Switch 2 if it’s out by then). ‘Players will once again assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they search for secret alien treasure while blasting everything in sight,’ is all the official blurb says. Meanwhile, the YouTube text offers a slightly different description: ‘In this next instalment of the definitive looter shooter, players will assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they blast their way through hordes of enemies in search of new treasures to loot on an all-new planet.

Beyond that, there’s a good chance it’ll show up again at The Game Awards in December, which is also organised by Gamescom Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley. ‘The team and I at Gearbox have a lot we’ve wanted to do with Borderlands since we first introduced the looter shooter genre to the world with our original game,’ said Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford.
‘All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are putting everything we have into making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever before while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.’ The movie might have been an embarrassing flop, but the franchise as a whole has sold a whopping 87 million copies so far. Which explains why this new sequel was always inevitable.
