Previous Bond girl Halle Berry has reflected on her film in the long-running spy franchise as she sang the praises of her James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan . The Oscar-winner, who played NSA agent Jinx Johnson in the 2002 film Die Another Day, lavished her leading man with compliments, crediting him with ‘restoring her faith in men’ and describing him as ‘a gentleman’. Berry, 58, was Irishman Brosnan’s final Bond girl – the affectionate moniker given to the actress who stars in the central female role in each 007 movie adventure – as he stepped down from the role after four films.
‘He will always be my Bond, always. I’m a Pierce Brosnan fan,’ the actress shared with Wired as part of the publication’s autocomplete interview. She went on to add, poignantly: ‘He restored my faith in men on that movie.
There couldn’t be a human who is more of a gentleman than Pierce Brosnan.’ Catwoman star Berry revealed that being in a 007 film ‘wasn’t on my wish list but confirmed that she had ‘loved the movies always’. ‘Having been in one, I feel like I’m a part of cinematic history.
Those movies are iconic. They will forever be a part of our history, and I’m really honoured to have been a part of one – especially with Pierce.’ Die Another Day was the 20th film in the James Bond franchise and came out as it marked its 40th anniversary, after Sir Sean Connery first played the role in 1962’s Dr No.
The film, directed by Lee Tamahori and written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, sees Bond sent to investigate the connection between a North Korean terrorist and a diamond mogul, who is funding the development of an international space weapon. Along the way, a flirtatious romance blossoms between Bond and Jinx, with Berry given a bikini moment as she emerges from the sea in the movie that harked back to original Bond girl Ursula Andress and was later referenced again by the next James Bond, Daniel Craig. While an original plot influenced by Bond creator Sir Ian Fleming’s novels Moonraker and The Man with the Golden Girl, as well as Kingsley Amis’s novel Colonel Sun, Die Another Day received decidedly mixed reviews from critics .
It is most remembered for Madonna’s cameo in an aggressive fencing scene, the naff invisible car and the ridiculous gene therapy tech plot that allows Colonel Tan-Sun Moon (Will Yun Lee) and entrepreneur Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens) to be, um, the same person. Nevertheless, it became the highest-grossing James Bond film at the time. Dame Judi Dech and Rosamund Pike co-starred, alongside John Cleese in his first and only outing as gadget master Q and Samantha Bond in her final appearance as Miss Moneypenny.
It was also the first Bond film since 1973’s Live and Let Die not to feature Desmond Llewelyn , who had played Q since the very start, following his death aged 85 in 1999. Berry is currently riding high after the strong reaction to her latest Netflix action film Union, which also stars Mark Whalberg and has been called ‘superb’ and ‘pure fun’. Her busy upcoming slate of releases also includes horror Never Let Go and Maude v Maude with Angelina Jolie , which has been described as a mix of Mr & Mrs Smith and Mission: Impossible.
