Of all the major redevelopment projects which have taken place in Bolton over the past 60 years, the one which brought about perhaps the most change was the construction of St Peter’s Way. (Image: Newsquest) This photo is from 1961 and it shows Church Wharf well before construction of the dual carriageway began. There’s almost a Victorian feel to the picture showing a clogged-up waterway running underneath the railway arches.

The large three-storey building in the centre of the picture looks as though it was a pub with a large sign advertising Wilson’s Ales on the wall. Does anyone know which pub this was? When work began on St Peter’s Way, this area would be cleared and the new road would pas under the arches, the only structure on this photo to survive..
