TWO boat blessing ceremonies are set to take place tomorrow to celebrate the Island’s search-and-rescue community. The annual events, held at Gorey and Bonne Nuit, will be attended by Ports of Jersey, as well as the crew of local and French rescue boats. The Gorey blessing will give thanks for lifeboat and air search crews.

The Channel Islands Air Search team is to carry out a fly-past and wreaths will be released in honour of those who have lost their lives, or their loved ones, at sea. Bonne Nuit’s sea service will celebrate the beauty of the bay and those who work and enjoy the sea. Harbourmaster Bill Sadler, who is speaking at the Gorey event, said: “The sea is the common bond that ties us together as an island and as a maritime community.

“The blessing of boats and crews is a tradition which spans continents and stretches back centuries, and it is important that we come together to give thanks to those who protect us when we are at sea.” – The blessings will take place at 10.30am on Bonne Nuit Pier and 11am on Gorey Pier.
