BLUEFIELD — The stage is set for the men’s basketball home opener for Bluefield State University. Cross-county rival Concord University will provide the out-of-conference opposition tonight at the Ned Shott Gym for a “Code Blue” doubleheader on the BSU campus. The women’s game tips off at 5:30, with the men’s game to follow.
“It is a rivalry,” said Big Blue men’s head coach Devin Hoehn. Speaking about his players’ take on the matchup, he said, “I’m sure it’s on their mind, but at the end of the day, it’s a basketball game.” “Todd’s done a phenomenal job,” Hoehn said about the work of CU head coach Todd May.
“We’re going to have to have our guys fired up and ready to go.” Bluefield State has fashioned a 2-1 start, after defeating King University 106-100 last Wednesday on the road. “I’ve got a really great group of guys, that have bought in to our program,” Hoehn said.
“I think that’s a huge part of our success.” With 25 regular-season games left after tonight, he added, “You never want to get too high, or too low,” following a victory or a defeat. Leading the way to the most recent win was 6-foot-4 senior Jordan Hines, who scored 22 points and snagged six rebounds against the Tornado in Bristol.
Hoehn said that Hines is “a gamer. He’s one of our hardest workers.” The output last week was a tribute to Hines’ work ethic.
