Bikôkô races back with new EP ‘A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0’. Out now, the EP continues her evolution, with Bikôkô grabbing all areas of music. In terms of lyrics and song structure, she clearly adores R&B, with aspects of West African sounds – in particular her early musical education with the Djembe – featuring prominently.
Building on her debut EP ‘Aura Aura’, the new EP finds Bikôkô becoming more at-ease with herself, allowing her confidence to grow as a result. Much of the material was built alongside acclaimed producer Kwes Darko, the patch-work production uniting aspects of neo-soul and broken beat, jazz and left-field electronics. A potent gesture of individuality, ‘A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0’ grapples with imperfections.

For as long as I can remember, I have put pressure on myself to excel in all areas of my life, to the point where it became obsessive. It wasn’t enough to just work a few hours a day, buy only what I needed, or use social media moderately; I only felt like I was doing enough when I was doing it all the time. Of course, I ended up driving myself crazy and have had to step back ever since to rethink the way I do things.
The title comes from a childhood anecdote. I had a friend in school who, despite being hardworking, didn’t get very good grades. One day, she was graded 1/10 on a test, and when she told her mother, she responded, “A 1 is better than a 0!” I find the phrase comfo.
