While Devdas, the despondent protagonist of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (and the evergreen tragic icon of the silver screen), may have turned to the bottle to cope with heartbreak, an enterprising youth from Bihar decided to make heartbreak into a profitable venture. The man, who hails from Buxar, Bihar, is the owner of a rather unique tea stall known as ‘ Bewafa Chai Wala ’. In an interview with Local 18 , Chhotu Gupta , the proprietor of the shop, said that he launched the stall in 2023 after suffering a painful heartbreak.

The shop is a hit with the locals. Gupta believes that his shop's success is due to the superior tea that is served there as well as its unusual moniker. Additionally, he disclosed that he offers four distinct flavors of tea and sells about 1,000 cups daily.

Pocket Pinch One of the factors behind the stall’s booming business is undoubtedly the affordable prices. The price range for a cup of piping hot tea ranges from Rs 10 to Rs 25 at ‘Bewafa Chai Wala’. The shop is open from 6 AM to 11 AM and from 4 PM to midnight.

Chhotu Gupta says that his tea's speciality is that it is prepared over a slow coal heat, which gives the tea a distinct flavor and unique fragrance. P. Gupta, Professor: Department of Finance and Business Economics, University of Delhi View Program Tea varieties such as black, white, green, and oolong are rich in beneficial plant-based compounds called polyphenols. Regular intake of these polyphenols may shield the body's cells from damage, which could in turn lower the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Specifically, green tea contains catechins, while black tea contains theaflavins—both of which are key contributors to these health benefits. Potential to Lower Blood Pressure Drinking tea may enhance the function of blood vessels and contribute to lowering blood pressure. It achieves this by boosting the production of nitric oxide, a compound that helps relax the inner muscles of blood vessels, improving blood flow.

May Benefit Cardiovascular Health Research indicates that consistent tea consumption may reduce the likelihood of heart disease, largely due to its polyphenol content. Catechins, especially abundant in green tea, have been shown to positively influence heart health and cardiovascular outcomes. Regulates Glycemic Response Tea polyphenols may aid in managing the body’s response to carbohydrates by slowing digestion and absorption, as well as promoting insulin release.

Among tea varieties, green tea appears to be the most effective in this respect. Could Reduce Diabetes Risk Tea’s polyphenols can inhibit digestive enzymes, such as lactase, and slow glucose absorption in the gut. Some studies suggest that a lifelong intake of these polyphenols may reduce the risk of developing diabetes, potentially as effectively as certain medications.

However, further research is needed. May Enhance Gut Health A significant portion of dietary polyphenols, including those found in tea, remain unabsorbed and reach the large intestine, where they are broken down by gut bacteria. This process provides fuel for beneficial gut bacteria, promoting a healthier gut ecosystem and improved gut function, along with modifying immune responses.

Possibly Reduces Cancer Risk Tea polyphenols may contribute to slowing the progression of certain cancers when combined with other factors. The strongest evidence so far supports a protective effect against oral cancer, with preliminary evidence suggesting benefits for liver, breast, and colon cancers. More well-structured studies are required to validate these findings.

Helps Relieve Stress and Anxiety Unlike coffee, which is known for its stimulating effects, tea is often regarded as a calming beverage. Though both contain caffeine, tea also includes the amino acid L-theanine, which promotes relaxation by increasing alpha brain wave activity. Boosts Attention and Focus Beverages that combine caffeine and L-theanine , like tea, have the greatest effect on improving attention and focus.

A cup of green tea contains around 25 mg of L-theanine, and its consumption has been linked to reduced cognitive decline, better concentration, and improved focus. Additionally, black tea has been shown to enhance memory and speed up task performance. May Promote Bone Health There is some evidence suggesting that tea, particularly green tea, may help preserve bone density and lower the risk of fractures.

This protective effect is once again attributed to the polyphenol content in tea..
