LANCASTER — Antelope Valley Community College District’s governing board unanimously awarded 21 bids for multiple services worth approximately $40.7 million for The Commons project. The Commons will be a 47,353-square-foot facility that will serve as the campus core for student life.

The project will include a full kitchen and dining facility, indoor and outdoor spaces for large gatherings and a student life center that supports student interaction, support and clubs as well as the student government offices. “I’m going to vote to approve this project, but I’m sorry that the project wasn’t a multi-purpose building like classrooms in addition to the student services,” trustee Michael Rives said at the Sept. 9 meeting.

“I really thought that if we had classrooms, maybe Cal State Bakersfield could lease it, but we’ll save that for another day. From what I’ve seen, The Commons is going to be a beautiful building and students will appreciate it.” The Commons will be the final large project to be paid for with funds from Measure AV funds, the $350 million bond measure passed by local voters in November 2016.

Visitors to the AV College main campus in Lancaster will see that construction continues on Cedar Hall, a three-story, 65,000 square-foot state of the art building that will house classrooms, faculty offices, executive suites and art gallery. It will also include a theater-style lecture classroom that will also be used as the board of trustees meeting room. The projected total cost for the building is approximately $57 million.

That project is expected to be completed and occupied by March 2025. [email protected].
