No wonder October is known as the month of surprises before the US presidential election. The most obvious of all must be Elon Musk, whose one-million-dollar-a-day giveaways to swing state voters have not only astonished local law enforcers but also confused law experts across blue and red states. The latest lawsuit brought by a Philadelphia district attorney against the world's richest person - and most talented brain - has not stopped him from giving out the checks.

Backed by elite legal advisers, Musk is confident he is not breaking the law even though he stands accused of violating its spirit.
