The 12-team College Football Playoff begins in a few days, and it’s going to be great. A Friday night game; a Saturday tripleheader. Massive college football games, the weekend before Christmas .

But the splendor comes at a cost. Future Septembers are going to be leaner. Maybe October and November, too.



Unless the CFP selection committee walks the Damascus Road, regular-season scheduling is about to undergo a sea change. And not for the better. This committee clearly has rejected strength of schedule as a priority in the process.

The committee fell back on horse-and-buggy thinking. Ranking teams based on record, making exceptions only for notable brands in the sport. Like Texas and Penn State, checking in at third and fourth in the final committee vote, even though neither of the 10-2 teams has a victory over a team in the committee’s top 25.
